Permits and licensing

- Licensing depends on the state: a trade license in some, a home-improvement registration in others, none in the rest. The finder shows what the record says where one exists.
Know what you're looking at

Vinyl siding is common and needs little upkeep, but it can crack in cold or warp near heat. Ask about thickness and which trim pieces are included.

Wood siding looks traditional and needs paint or stain and regular checks. Ask about the species, the finish and how the boards are sealed.

Under the siding sits a weather barrier. A siding quote should say which barrier and flashing go behind the boards, not just the boards themselves.

Soffit and fascia are the trim at the roof edge. Rot is common where gutters leak: ask how damaged boards will be replaced and priced.
