Permits and licensing

  • This work rarely needs a permit, but a town can still require one for parts of it.
  • Most states keep no license record for this trade, and whether one exists in yours depends on the state and the job size, so a search may find none. Use review sites and ask for references from recent customers.

Know what you're looking at

  • A roll-off truck tilting its tall container to unload on a paved lot.

A roll-off truck delivers and collects large containers. Ask where the container will sit, whether you need a street permit, and how long it can stay.

  • A blue dumpster beside a yellow industrial building with stacked materials next to it.

Heavy materials like concrete, roofing and soil may have weight limits and separate fees. Ask before you fill it.

  • A garbage truck with painted artwork and a rear loader on a city street.

Curbside pickup rules vary by town: bulky items, appliances with refrigerant and electronics often need a separate pickup or drop-off. Check yours before you hire anyone.
